Shamor v’Zachor (Observe and Remember)

The Torah cries out, “Observe and Remember the Shabbat/Sabbath!” Sounds easy, but everything in modern culture militates against fully embracing the weekly set-apart day of re-creation rest. In contrast, these 2 paintings show the flames of light that radiate from the Shabbat table into all of life.

The first painting is geometric and highly structured. This is analogous to the traditions and commitment that create the structure of keeping the Sabbath. The second painting depicts the increasing flow of energy and power that are the celebration of the Shabbat. In this painting, Shabbat’s beautiful structure gives way to a flow of passionate worship, intimacy and rejuvenation, as warmth and life emanate from the growing flames of the candles into the world.
